The creation of a single market within the European Union, in which goods, people and services could circulate freely, required the creation of a new and shared infrastructure of technical regulation and standardization. The New Approach Directives, which gradually entered into force from 1987, represent a fundamental tool of this new infrastructure.
Among the New Approach Directives, we mention Directive 2006/42/EC relating to machinery, Directive 2014/35/EU relating to electrical equipment operating at low voltage, Directive 2014/30/EU relating to electromagnetic compatibility and Directive 2014/68/UE relating to pressure equipment (PED).
